Al Bahar Towers (Pineapple Tower in Abu Dhabi)

The most prominent of these towers are the Al Bahar Towers, the 29-storey twin towers, which won the award as the second best tower in the world at the Emporis Skyscraper Awards. The two towers, which house government and institutional offices, have become a prominent landmark for visitors to the UAE capital.

The exterior facade of the Twin Towers is built entirely of glass, but the outer surface is covered with a protective structure made up of 2,000 sunshades that open and close automatically according to the intensity of the sun's rays.

This smart geometric design is inspired by the traditional “mashrabiya” that has been decorating the windows of traditional Arab homes since the 14th century. This design provides both shade and privacy, while at the same time allowing outdoor views throughout the day.

The building's glass structure is designed with an independent frame, and each triangle of awnings is coated with fiberglass and programmed to follow the movement of the sun. At night, umbrellas remain folded; This allows the main glass façade of the building to be visible. In the early morning, the awnings in the eastern area open automatically when the sun rises, and whenever the sun moves to cover other areas of the building, the awnings follow suit and open and close in sync with the movement of the sun.

This design allows the percentage of solar radiation entering the building to be reduced by half, which saves a large amount of electrical energy consumed by the air conditioning system. In addition, the ability of awnings to provide shade to the building prompted the architects to dispense with dark glass that blocks outside light at all times, which contributed to saving the electricity consumed by lighting systems during the day.
