Scientists agree that cooler temperatures in the fall and shorter daylight hours are the primary factors in determining when leaves fall. Deciduous trees, which shed their leaves seasonally, do so to conserve energy during cold weather and reduced photosynthesis, relying on sugars stored during the winter.

Previously, scientists thought that rising temperatures would delay leaf fall by two to three weeks by the end of the century. But the new study suggests that delay may not happen as expected.
