A specialized team from the Geological Survey and Mineral Resources Authority in Hadhramaut Governorate went to the scene of the accident to conduct a technical study on the collapses. Engineer Fayez Basra, Director General of the Authority, explained that the study indicated that the main reason behind these collapses is the heterogeneity of the rock characteristics between the upper limestone layer and the water-saturated sandstone layer, with a clay layer between them. This formation led to saturation and imbalance between the rock masses, causing cracks and collapses.
Basra confirmed that the area of the collapse in the village of Jabal Hisn Basim extends to 200 linear meters, indicating that the collapses may continue and expand during the next ten years.
It is noteworthy that the village of Jabal Hisn Basim witnessed sudden rockslides last June 11, which alarmed residents and caused them to flee from nearby homes.
