Should you reconsider having a gas stove in your home?

Ben Ewald, a doctor in Newcastle, said that people should reconsider having a gas stove in the home, especially if there are children. He warned through the media that "living with a gas stove is equivalent in health to living with a smoker."

Ewald explained that the flame emits harmful particles such as nitrogen dioxide, which flow into the respiratory system, stick to the lungs and cause irritation. He added that these health problems most affect children exposed to gas, but they can also affect adults and the elderly.

Ewald noted that there are many causes of asthma, including viruses, which are the biggest, but exposure to a gas stove is on that list. He explained, "The nitrogen dioxide produced by the flame is an irritant to the respiratory system and can be toxic, and may lead to asthma. Also, the formaldehyde released by the flame irritates the respiratory system, in addition to a small percentage of benzene released from the flame, which is a carcinogenic substance."

Research conducted by the International Journal of Epidemiology revealed that children exposed to gas stoves at home have a 42% increased risk of developing asthma and a 24% greater chance of being diagnosed with asthma at some point in life.

Ewald recommended using multiple methods to reduce damage to the gas stove, such as opening the door or window before turning on the stove, and always using the kitchen hood.
