ArabiaWeather.com- The State of Kuwait seeks to exploit alternative energy sources in the seawater desalination process, as the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research has begun its research procedures by developing technologies that invest solar energy in seawater desalination.

The institute also signed an agreement with a French research institution specialized in this field, with the aim of recording a global scientific precedent in the sector of establishing water desalination plants using solar energy, in light of the lack of global experiences in this direction.

The Director of the Institute, Dr. Naji Al-Mutairi, stated that the seawater desalination process consumes fossil fuels at huge material costs at the present time, as the cost of the state spending on water production in 2013 amounted to approximately 700 million dinars.

The Institute will take advantage of international expertise to build a research unit for desalination of sea water by solar energy, and based on the research results of this unit, a huge commercial unit will be designed that will be the first of its kind in the world.

Al-Mutairi pointed out that Kuwait will be able, within two years, to start desalinating water using solar energy , and then gradually dispensing with the use of oil in desalinating sea water, and indicated that the establishment of solar water desalination plants will support the sustainability of water security in the country and the provision of drinking water at reasonable costs.

He stated that this project will serve as a cornerstone for obtaining the necessary information in light of the prevailing conditions in the Arab Gulf countries, which are related to the temperature and salinity of sea water, as the Gulf water is not renewed continuously, but rather takes place over a period ranging between two and five years.

He pointed out that the high salinity of the water , which is more than one and a half times the salinity of open seas and oceans, in addition to the vast temperature differences of the waters of the Arabian Gulf, which reach between winter and summer 13 degrees in winter and 35 degrees in summer, greatly affect the design and operation of desalination units that receive water during the year. hot and cold.
