Weather of Arabia - What are the winds and what are the types of winds?
Wind is a natural phenomenon that is not visible, but we feel it. It expresses the movement of air particles horizontally or closer to the horizontal from one place to another, and air usually moves from areas with high atmospheric pressure to areas with low atmospheric pressure, and the movement of these particles is affected by the movement and rotation of the earth around Itself and around the sun and therefore differ in how it is formed, its speed, duration and directions as well.
Permanent winds are divided into several categories:
The trade winds were called by this name because the merchants used to benefit from them by moving the merchant ships. On the lower layers of the atmosphere, the trade winds have a moderate speed ranging between 16-24 kilometers per hour, and their direction is northeasterly in the northern hemisphere, and southeasterly in the southern hemisphere.
Reverse / westerly winds blow from the high pressure areas behind the tropics to the low pressure areas at the polar circles. The direction of the opposite winds is usually southwesterly in the northern hemisphere and northwesterly in the southern hemisphere.
Polar winds blow from the poles to the low pressure areas at the polar circles. The direction of the polar winds is northeasterly in the northern hemisphere and southeasterly in the southern hemisphere. Polar winds are cold, dry and usually weak.
Monsoons are called by this name because they blow in certain seasons. Monsoons are characterized by a change in direction in the summer season from the winter season, and these winds appear between the two tropics.
Monsoons are of two types:
Local winds are formed by the difference in atmospheric pressure over a small area for a short time, and may be caused by other factors such as terrain
The local winds differ from the monsoons in that they are not comprehensive for the entire season, as they blow during intermittent periods.
