Arab Weather - With the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, Jordanians begin to wonder about the timing of switching the clock from summer time to winter time, which usually takes place in October of each year. But in 2022, the Jordanian government made a decision to cancel winter time completely and install summer time throughout the year.
Despite this decision, the question that comes to many people's minds is: What will happen if winter time is applied again?
Benefits of applying winter time in Jordan
- Saving electricity: Changing the time contributes to saving electricity, as sunrise at a suitable time makes Jordanians less dependent on artificial lighting in the morning while preparing to go to school or work.
- Reduce heating usage: Winter time reduces the amount of time that home heating is used in the morning, which helps save costs.
- Improved psychological state: Going to work or school at sunrise reduces the psychological burden people feel when they have to wake up in the dark and cold.
- Increased productivity: Working on winter time has a positive impact on productivity levels, as going to work or school at the beginning of the day is better than going in the dark, which improves the capacity of students and employees.
- Helping villagers: Villagers rely on walking to get to school or work, so winter time reduces the difficulty of waking up in the dark and cold to arrive on time.
- Adapting to nature: Working on winter time is an adaptation to natural changes in sunrise and sunset times, rather than countering them.
Winter time in Jordan?
In 2022, the Cabinet approved the implementation of daylight saving time throughout the year, based on a study showing that this decision allows for the use of the longest possible number of daylight hours.
This installation also contributes to the stability of the timing with the universal time (Greenwich), which facilitates international communication processes, and fixes the dates throughout the year.
Countries of the world and time change
It is worth noting that about 60% of the world's countries do not change their time throughout the year, while 40% of them depend on changing the time during the summer and winter. However, some of these countries also tend to fix their time to avoid annual changes.
Disadvantages of installing daylight saving time in Jordan
- Late sunrise in winter: Daylight saving time causes students and employees to go to school and work in the early morning hours before sunrise, leaving them facing cold and darkness.
- Increased lighting and heating costs: With daylight saving time, Jordanians will have to use lighting and heating for longer periods in the early morning.
- Parents' anxiety: Parents fear for their children when they leave for school or university in the dark, which increases the level of anxiety and psychological pressure.
- Winter driving hazards: Heavy traffic in the early morning hours coincides with the risk of frost, freezing and fog, which increases the danger of winter travel.
