Snow blanketed Johannesburg and other parts of the highlands of South Africa on Monday, with weather services warning of possible road closures and dangerously low temperatures.

Meteorological services have warned of possible road closures and frigid temperatures while the city, which is located at an altitude of more than 1,700 metres, has never experienced such weather. However, snowfall is still rare, and the last time snow was seen was in 2012.

The South African Meteorological Service stressed that icy temperatures posed a danger to citizens while rising heating demands outpace electricity supplies as the South African winter continues into July and August.
