Arab Weather - The next full moon on Monday, August 19, 2024 , will be a unique event known as the "supermoon" or "blue moon." This moon has other traditional names such as the "sturgeon moon," the "corn moon," and the "barley moon."

According to a report from the US space agency NASA, this full moon will remain visible for three days and is the first of a series that includes four supermoons during this year.

Why is the giant moon described as a traitor?

Despite its name, a “blue moon” will not appear this color in reality. The term is a play on the English word “blue” and refers to a full moon that appears as an extra in a season that has four full moons instead of the usual three, which can affect the expected timing of religious festivals and celebrations such as Lent and Easter.

The term "supermoon" refers to the moon that appears when it is near its closest point to Earth, and was introduced by astrologer Richard Noll in 1979.

Giant Moons of 2024

After the super blue moon on August 19, astronomy enthusiasts will enjoy three more supermoons in 2024:

September 17, 2024: Known as the “Harvest Moon,” this is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, which occurs around September 22 or 23, and provides extra light in the evening, helping farmers work longer during the harvest season.
October 17, 2024: Called the “Hunter’s Moon,” this is because hunters traditionally prepared for winter during this time by hunting game.
November 15, 2024: Known as the “Beaver Moon,” this is the time when beavers prepare for winter. This was also a good time to set beaver traps before the marshes freeze over.
December 15, 2024: Called the “Cold Moon,” due to the long, cold nights that characterize this time of year, it signals the approach of winter.
