Arab Weather - The Saudi Ministry of Education announced an important decision related to protecting the health of students in all schools, as it was decided to ban the sale of chips and chocolate, in addition to about 30 other types of food in school cafeterias. This decision comes as part of a package of urgent measures aimed at enhancing the health of male and female students, and ensuring the provision of a safe food environment in schools.

School canteen operating standards

The Ministry stressed the need to adhere to operating school cafeterias in accordance with the health conditions that were prepared in cooperation with the Education Development Holding Company. These conditions were determined based on the Gulf specifications for the validity of food products, which prohibit the sale of any product that may harm the health of students. The Ministry also demanded that school cafeterias be operated in accordance with the highest health safety standards to ensure the provision of healthy and appropriate food options for students.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Harran , Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, issued a circular to all educational administrations in the Kingdom, calling for the operation of school cafeterias in education offices, with special instructions to education offices that manage girls’ schools. He also indicated that contracts should be signed with companies operating cafeterias for a period of one year only, provided that these companies are committed to the health conditions set by the Ministry, in addition to adhering to the Gulf specifications related to the quality of packaging, the validity of products, and the method of storing and transporting refrigerated and frozen foods.

Dr. Al-Harran explained that the operation of school cafeterias must be done in accordance with general guidelines that stipulate the preparation and provision of food on the same day of sale, while ensuring that all vendors in the cafeterias have an official license registered in their commercial register.
